I just went to 1708 Gallery to see FEED2013. Loved the paintings by Eleanor Aldrich, particularly Landscape in Front of Blinds. I enjoyed the wit of using strips of painting material (which I think was silicon) to represent blinds instead of realistically painting blinds. Joshua Haycraft's work documents in video a scary futuristic world while quoting the past. I particularly enjoyed details in Haycraft's Celebrations, such as the figures waving and holding briefcases. The movement in Celebrations caused it to hold my interest longer than his other videos. The creamy whites, blues, and blue greens in Accomodations were serene in a scary dreamy way, but I felt like I got the content of the work before 2 minutes were up (which was the length of the video). I was intrigued by the whole show but had to read about Raewyn Martin's work to understand it.
We art teachers at Tucker spent our staff development hours at VMFA. We went through the Vogel exhibit again. I was spellbound by the drawings of Daryl Treverius. I felt that I saw them in a new way. It was fun seeing the little Pat Steir again. It's so dainty compared to her big work. We spent a lot of time in the 21st century gallery. I love the work of Siemon Allen. I remember his show at the Anderson Gallery. Totally wonderful. I loved the repetition of the stamps and the albums in his work at the Anderson Gallery. Repetition is central to my work, and I wish I could do it as beautifully as he does.
