I think of my work as a
series of encounters between tactile materiality and illusion. My interest is
in resolving this conflict through representation. What this means in the
studio is using materials in such a way that they contribute to the internal logic
of the representation but retain an external existence. I find there is
frankness in tactility that becomes unreliable when it is activated as a thing
in the painting. The painterly marks similarly alternate between creating
illusionistic space and revealing the flatness of the picture plane. My subject
matter is a result of finding places where this phenomenon may exist.

I love this piece. I should research it. It looks like the grout is squishing out from between the bricks way more than normal. Did she find a wall that looked like this? Did she build this wall specifically for this piece. Is it an installation, or is it a public mural? Or... is it just an image OF the brick wall and the painting... and THAT is the real piece. Inquiring mind (me) wants to know. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI pretty sure the mortar is silicon squeezed out of the tube. She's done that it other paintings to create blinds on a window and other things. I really love her painting.
DeleteI can't tell if this in actually painted on a wall or on a flat surface with the illusion of depth. Very interesting!
